Mac’s Freedom From Malware May Be Over

DailyTech reported –

Security researchers at Sophos Labs have discovered a naughty new trojan that’s in the process of beta testing attack capabilities against the growing population of Mac users. The trojan exploits open back doors in OS X to gain a good deal of access to the system.  It can be transmitted through a variety of vectors, including torrent files or seemingly legitimate download programs.  It could also be, in the future, delivered via the exploitation of browser flaws to perform “drive by downloads”. Once inside, the Trojan gets down to business, allowing the attacker to have their way with their Apple victim.  The attacker can plant text files on the desktop, force URLs to open, run shell commands, and pop up fake password windows in a phishing attempt. They can also force the users machine shutdown or reboot. When a reboot is forced an amusing message pops up, informing:

I am a Trojan Horse, so i have infected your Mac Computer. I know, most people think Macs can’t be infected, but look, you ARE Infected! I have full controll over your Computer and i can do everything I want, and you can do nothing to prevent it. So, Im a very new Virus, under Development, so there will be much more functions when im finished.

It’ll Never Work!

This page from lhup.edu has many quotes from throughout history, from a wide variety of doubting Thomases who were quite certain that something or other was a terrible idea, doomed to failure. My favorite is near the end – If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can’t be done.– Peter Ustinov

70 Year Old Woman Charged With Prostitution

And yes, it did occur in Florida.

The Herald-Tribune reports –

CHARLOTTE COUNTY – Authorities arrested four women, including a 70-year-old, on prostitution charges following a raid at a Port Charlotte spa yesterday. Acting on a tip, undercover sheriff’s detectives began surveillance at Mandala Health Spa, 675 Tamiami Trail, and determined the women had received compensation for sexual acts within the business on numerous occasions, according to an arrest report.

Are Plastic Bags The Greener Option?

Cnet reports –

I find certainty a little dubious. Somehow, nothing has ever seemed that certain on this earth, so when people–especially scientists or green activists–claim they know everything, my skeptical muscle goes all Cirque du Soleil. So please raise an eyebrow with me to a stimulating article in the Independent newspaper. It reveals the existence of a report, commissioned by the U.K. government, that concludes that plastic bags are actually less harmful to the environment than either paper or cotton versions.

Play 20 Questions Against A Computer

Akinator is an online 20 questions game. You think of any famous person or character and Akinator asks a series of questions to determine your person or character. Akinator is very good at the game. You must give a User name, age and sex before playing and the webpage looks like crap, but it is a great way to kill a few minutes.

FreeFile Review – Display Calibration

This FreeFile is only for Windows 7 users (an alternative for XP users is at the bottom of this review). The Display Color Calibration Wizard is a hidden gem in Windows 7. Why Microsoft chose to hide it is beyond me. I find it very useful in get that big monitor to look its very best. The wizard helps you adjust brightness, contrast and color.

The Display Color Calibration Wizard is included with Windows 7, so no installation is needed. The easiest way to run the program is to type “dccw” into the Start menu search box. This will show a link to “dccw.exe” at the top – click it and the display calibrator launches. The Run box can also be used to launch the program.

It is fairly simple to use. If you’ve used other monitor calibration software, this one will seem familiar. If you’ve never calibrated a monitor, it may take a little experimentation to get it right, but don’t worry, you won’t hurt your monitor. I found an excellent tutorial online that will walk you through the calibration process HERE.

The only negatives that I found were the previously mentioned difficulty in finding the program and the lack of a ‘Back’ button. The only way to return to a previous page is to ‘Cancel’ out of the program and start over. I found that aggravating. While the Display Color Calibration Wizard is for Windows 7 only, Calibrize performs similarly on Windows XP.

Get Calibrize HERE.

– – The Bottom Line – –

Display Color Calibration Wizard increases the accuracy of your monitor and it’s part of Windows – nothing to download or install. If you spend a lot of time staring at your monitor, you need to try it ASAP.

Iraqi Who Lied About WMDs Comes Forward

The Guardian reports –

The defector who convinced the White House that Iraq had a secret biological weapons programme has admitted for the first time that he lied about his story, then watched in shock as it was used to justify the war. Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, codenamed Curveball by German and American intelligence officials who dealt with his claims, has told the Guardian that he fabricated tales of mobile bioweapons trucks and clandestine factories in an attempt to bring down the Saddam Hussein regime, from which he had fled in 1995.
