Was Windows XP Default Wallpaper An Actual Photo?

Yes, it was, according to TheNextWeb –

Have you ever stopped to wonder where the image was taken, or who took it? In fact, the image is so crisp you might have assumed it wasn’t real at all. The man behind the camera  is American photographer Charles O’Rear. Don’t let his name fool you into thinking that the photo was in fact taken in Ireland. Bliss, as it turns out, is in California. In Sonoma County to be exact. The photo was taken in 1996, years before Windows XP launched, and before the area was converted into a vineyard.

Are Plastic Bags The Greener Option?

I find certainty a little dubious. Somehow, nothing has ever seemed that certain on this earth, so when people–especially scientists or green activists–claim they know everything, my skeptical muscle goes all Cirque du Soleil. So please raise an eyebrow with me to a stimulating article in the Independent newspaper. It reveals the existence of a report, commissioned by the U.K. government, that concludes that plastic bags are actually less harmful to the environment than either paper or cotton versions.

Phony Products Receive Energy Star Certification

Yahoo News reports –

WASHINGTON – Fifteen phony products — including a gasoline-powered alarm clock  — won a label from the government certifying them as energy efficient in a test of the federal “Energy Star” program. Investigators concluded the program is “vulnerable to fraud and abuse.” A report released Friday said government investigators tried to pass off 20 fake products as energy efficient, and only two were rejected. Three others didn’t get a response. The program run by the Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency is supposed to identify energy-efficient products to help consumers. Tax credits and rebates serve as incentives to buy Energy Star products.

Interesting concept – plastic-like sheets can be printed, erased and reprinted. One downside is that the “paper” costs over $3 (300 yen) per sheet.
