As the world’s biggest polluter, China faces an extraordinary challenge in reducing its emissions — one made all the more difficult because of the countless high-polluting factories scattered across the country. Authorities have moved to shut down many of the worst-offending factories, but some factory owners simply pay informal “fines” to local authorities before re-opening. Photojournalist Kevin Frayer traveled to Inner Mongolia with Getty Images earlier this month to capture some haunting pictures of life inside one steel mill.

Up until now, we’ve really only seen SpaceX’s rocket landing in the middle of the ocean from afar. Chase planes near the drone ship provided a spectacular view of the milestone event, but now, SpaceX has released up-close pictures of the landing taken from the ship itself. The images capture the Falcon 9’s slow descent on top of the barge, and even show how much the ship tilted once the vehicle was on board. If you want to feel like a rocket is about to land on your head, these pictures will do the trick.
Istanbul’s Colorful Architecture [pics]

What imagery comes to mind when you think about Istanbul? Whatever it is, it’s probably not modern architecture, and that is what Turkish photographer Yener Torun is trying to change.
“Just think of the Istanbul photos you have seen before: grand mosques, old streets, seagulls over the Bosphorus. I show a completely different side. Even long-term residents can’t believe these pics were taken in the city they live in,” says the photographer.

This set of photos on Imgur illustrate the differences between what we expect and what we find when traveling. Beautiful, pristine beaches and magnificent landmarks seem less appealing when the crowds arrive.
