FEMA’s Waffle House Index – Your Tax Dollars At Work

BizJournals reports –

When the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency assesses damage after a major hurricane he has a lot of statistics and scientific models at his fingertips to determine hardest-hit areas, but one of his top barometers is Norcross, Ga.-based Waffle House. The company has built good will within communities by being open during disasters. If the restaurant is closed or serving a limited menu, emergency responders know things are bad, reports the Wall Street Journal. “If you get there and the Waffle House is closed?” FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate has said. “That’s really bad. That’s where you go to work.” Waffle House Inc.’s 1,600 restaurants stretch from the mid-Atlantic to Florida and across the Gulf Coast, where hurricanes are most likely to strike, the WSJ reports. The company is known for staying open to serve storm-weary residents, utility crews and emergency workers. The company has a color-coded system federal officials watch. Green means the restaurant is offering a full menu and lights are on. Code yellow signals a limited menu and power is coming from a generator, at best, and food supplies are potentially low. Red means the restaurant is closed, a sign of severe damage or unsafe conditions, the WSJ reports.
