America’s Newest Tool To Fight Terrorism – Snow Cone Machines – Seriously!

Gawker reports –

The West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission, which manages homeland security operations, um, along the western Michigan shoreline, recently gave snow cone machines costing $11,700 to 13 counties under its jurisdiction. I bet you are wondering why! Well, according to a memo the machines (which some officials would rather you call “ice shaving machines”) can make ice to treat injuries—but they also make icy treats, to treat people who either have or should have questions about homeland security. In other words, this is not a waste of money, so please stop it right now with your raised eyebrows, and your sarcastic commentary.

Lloyd’s Sues Saudi Arabia For Funding 9/11 Attacks

The Independent reports –

A Lloyd’s insurance syndicate has begun a landmark legal case against Saudi Arabia, accusing the kingdom of indirectly funding al-Qa’ida and demanding the repayment of £136m it paid out to victims of the 9/11 attacks. The Brighton-based Lloyd’s 3500 syndicate, which paid $215m compensation to companies and individuals involved, alleges that the oil-rich Middle Eastern superpower bears primary responsibility for the atrocity because al-Qa’ida was supported by banks and charities acting as “agents and alter egos” for the Saudi state. The detailed case, which names a number of prominent Saudi charities and banks as well as a leading member of the al-Saud royal family, will cause embarrassment to the Saudi government, which has long denied claims that Osama bin Laden’s organisation received official financial and practical support from his native country. Outlined in a 156-page document filed in western Pennsylvania, where United Airlines flight 93 crashed on 9/11, the claim suggests that the nine defendants “knowingly” provided resources, including funding, to al-Qa’ida in the years before the attack and encouraged anti-Western sentiment which increased support for the terror group. The legal claim states: “Absent the sponsorship of al-Qa’ida’s material sponsors and supporters, including the defendants named therein, al-Qa’ida would not have possessed the capacity to conceive, plan and execute the 11 September attacks. The success of al-Qa’ida’s agenda, including the 11 September attacks themselves, has been made possible by the lavish sponsorship al-Qa’ida has received from its material sponsors and supporters over more than a decade leading up to 11 September 2001.”

Gitmo Plans 1st. Visiting Day

According to The WashingtonPost –

The Pentagon is considering allowing the families of detainees at Guantanamo Bay to visit them, an unprecedented step to ease the isolation of inmates who in some cases have been held at the U.S. facility for close to a decade, according to congressional aides. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which monitors conditions at the military prison in Cuba and facilitates videoconferences between detainees and their families, has been in serious discussions with the Pentagon about a visitation program, the aides said.

TSA Coming To A Mall Near You? – WTF

ABC Australia reported –

A year ago the administration was contending with a failed attempt to blow up a plane over Detroit by a man allegedly trying to ignite explosives sewn into his underwear. US authorities responded by installing new screening machines and initiating draconian body searches at airports. Homeland security secretary Janet Napolitano says other measures were also taken, citing increased security of “soft targets” like hotels and shopping centres. She says authorities are continually trying to stay one step ahead as terrorist organisations become more creative in their tactics. “The overall message is everything is objectively better than it was a year ago,” she said. “One of the things we look at is what other avenues might they select as a target. “We look at so-called soft targets – hotels, shopping malls, for example – all of which we have reached out to in the past year and done a fair amount of training for their own employees.”
