Chocolate Now More Awesome – With Holograms

holo-chocoNewScientist reports –

Why settle for a bar of boring old regular chocolate when you can chow down on the holographic variety instead? Morphotonix, a company based in Lausanne, Switzerland, has developed a way to imprint holograms on to chocolate – without using additives. Morphotonix etches the required structure into a master mould made from metal. This is then used to make plastic moulds that in turn shape the chocolate. Both dark and milk chocolate can be used, though the complex physics and chemistry of microstructures means the hologram won’t form on some varieties. “We have been testing it with many types of chocolate. Sometimes it works great and sometimes no matter how hard we try it doesn’t mould,” says Morphotonix CEO Veronica Savu.

Artist Drops Stones Into Paint To Create Flowers [pics]

Orchid_sWired reports –

Fabian Oefner is a night owl, but that’s mostly by necessity. The Switzerland-based artist does most of his work after dark, long after the sunshine stops streaming into the big windows of his studio. This is when he’s finally able to capture some truly magical moments. Oefner is best known for his brightly colored paint experiments that make invisible natural forces like gravity, air pressure and centrifugal force visible.

Sheep Will Text Shepherd When Wolf Approaches

According to Phys.org –

Using sheep to alert shepherds of an imminent wolf attack by text message might sound fanciful, but testing is already under way in Switzerland where the predator appears to be back. During the experiment, the change in the flock’s heartbeat was found to be significant enough to imagine a system whereby the sheep could be fitted with a collar that releases a repellent to drive the wolf away, while also sending an SMS to the shepherd. “It’s the first time that such a system has been tried outdoors,” said biologist Jean-Marc Landry, who took part in testing on a Swiss meadow this week. In the trial, reported by the country’s news agency ATS, around 10 sheep were each equipped with a heart monitor before being targeted by a pair of Wolfdogs — both of which were muzzled. During the experiment, the change in the flock’s heartbeat was found to be significant enough to imagine a system whereby the sheep could be fitted with a collar that releases a repellent to drive the wolf away, while also sending an SMS to the shepherd. The device is aimed at owners of small flocks who lack the funds to keep a sheepdog, Landry said, adding that it could also be used in tourist areas where guard dogs are not popular. A prototype collar is expected in the autumn and testing is planned in Switzerland and France in 2013. Other countries including Norway are said to be interested.

Bush Cancels Trip To Switzerland Over Fears Of Arrest

According to Reuters –

Former President George W. Bush has canceled a visit to Switzerland, where he was to address a Jewish charity gala, due to the risk of legal action against him for alleged torture, rights groups said on Saturday. Bush was to be the keynote speaker at Keren Hayesod’s annual dinner on February 12 in Geneva. But pressure has been building on the Swiss government to arrest him and open a criminal investigation if he enters the Alpine country. Criminal complaints against Bush alleging torture have been lodged in Geneva, court officials say.
