Stan Musial’s Greatest Accomplishment Occurred Off The Field

The greatest St.Louis Cardinal, Stan Musial, turns 90 Sunday, November 21, 2010. The St.Louis Post-Dispatch printed a special section for the occasion, which reminded me of Stan’s most outstanding accomplishment. It occurred but 50 years ago, and now seems to be impossible. After a disappointing season in 1959, Stan asked for and received a 25% pay cut. Can anyone imagine any of today’s athletes doing that? Stan “The Man” truly represents baseball and America at their best.

Happy Birthday Stan!

Cardinals Exercise Option On Pujols

Belleville News Democrat reports –

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday exercised their $16 million contract option on first baseman Albert Pujols for 2011. The team also announced that left-handed reliever Trever Miller’s option for 2011 was met. Miller needed to pitch in at least 45 games to have his $2 million salary exercised for next season. Pujols, 30, led the National League in home runs (42) and RBIs (118), and he tied Matt Holliday for the team lead in batting at .312. Holliday’s average, however, was slightly higher: .31208 to .31175. Pujols hit his 400th career home run and also set the franchise mark for career multi-homer games with 39.
