Cameras To Watch The Cameras That Watch You

According to WTOP.com –

PALMER PARK, Md. – Many people find speed cameras frustrating, and some in the region are taking their rage out on the cameras themselves. But now there’s a new solution: cameras to watch the cameras. One is already in place, and Prince George’s County Police Maj. Robert V. Liberati hopes to have up to a dozen more before the end of the year. “It’s not worth going to jail over a $40 ticket or an arson or destruction of property charge,” says Liberati. Liberati is the Commander of the Automated Enforcement Section, which covers speed and red-light cameras. Since April, six people have damaged speed cameras.

Deadly Concrete Alligators Invade Missouri

According to The HeraldTribune –

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Police responding to a rare alligator sighting in suburban Kansas City took quick action to dispatch of the beast, shooting it in the head, as instructed, while it lurked menacingly in the weeds leading down to a pond. It wasn’t until a second rifle shot bounced off the reptile’s head that the officers realized they had mortally wounded a concrete lawn ornament. A resident of a subdivision near the pond called police Saturday evening to report that his children spotted the alligator while they were playing in some nearby woods. After consulting a conservation agent, who told them to kill the gator if they felt it posed a danger, one of the officers shot it twice in the head before realizing something was up, said Tom Gentry, an Independence police spokesman. “It didn’t move,” Gentry said. “They inched up closer and closer and discovered it was a mock-up of a real alligator made to look like it was real.”

Interesting Site – National Speedtrap Exchange

This site maintains a database of speed traps in the US and Canada. Users can contribute new traps, as well as giving their opinion whether entries already in the database are really speed traps (with just a click – no registration needed). It seems to be accurate – the ones in my area are listed. To use the site, just click on your state and then on your city. That will bring up all speed traps in that city. If you agree, click on “Yes! This is a speedtrap.”, if not, click on “No, this is definitely NOT a speed trap.”.

Ford Introducing New Police Interceptor

US News reports –

The next time you’re pulled over for speeding, you might be surprised by what you see in the rearview. Ford  recently unveiled its replacement for the Crown-Victoria-based Police Interceptor — and it’s a Taurus. “Ford first introduced its police package in 1950 and today the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is the industry leader,” explains Jalopnik. “The automaker’s dominated the streets to the point that over the last five years, Ford’s controlled more than 70% of the patrol cars sold. … Unfortunately, the Crown Vic’s Panther-platform’s getting a little long in the tooth — it hasn’t seen a redesign in over 15 years.”According to Cars.com, “Police departments across the country won’t be piloting just any Taurus off dealership lots. Ford says approximately 90 percent of the interior has been redesigned for police use.” Unique features include front seats with anti-stab plates to protect officers from violent criminals and vinyl rear seats to make cleaning up after messy ones easier. That’s not all. USA Today reports: “The Taurus-based model will keep the Police Interceptor name but offer just two 3.5-liter V-6 engines, no big V-8s, as in the Crown Vic. Ford boasts that the standard version will be 25% more fuel efficient than the current standard V-8. And the version with two turbochargers, what Ford calls EcoBoost, will deliver 365 horsepower, 115 more than the standard Crown Vic.” The 365-horsepower V6 is the same found in the performance-tuned Taurus SHO. An optional all-wheel drive system will also be available.
