Canadian Justice – Maple Syrup Thieves Found Guilty

According to CBC News –

A New Brunswick man was found guilty Saturday of fraud and trafficking stolen goods in connection with a maple syrup heist in Quebec. Etienne Saint-Pierre of Kedgwick was one of four men accused in relation to the theft of 9,500 barrels of maple syrup belonging to the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers between August 2011 and July 2012 valued at $18.7 million. In August 2012, it was discovered that maple syrup in a St-Louis-de-Blandford, Que., warehouse had been replaced by water.

Teen Receives 17 Life Sentences Plus 75 Years For 1 Murder

STLtoday reports –

A St. Louis judge sentenced a teenager to 17 life sentences in prison, plus an additional 75 years, for his role in a bloody home invasion that left one woman dead and her family torn apart emotionally. Circuit Court Judge Robert H. Dierker Jr. sentenced Ledale Nathan, 18, this morning. One of the life sentences, for the murder of Gina Stallis, 34, is without the possibility of parole, five of the sentences are to run consecutively and eleven are to run concurrently. On Oct. 5, 2009, Nathan and an accomplice terrorized a family in a home in the 900 block of Hickory Street in the LaSalle Park neighborhood just south of downtown, prosecutors said. Stallis, 34, a nurse and mother of two, was shot to death. Her cousin, off-duty city firefighter Nicholas Koenig, and off-duty city police Officer Isabella Lovadina were wounded. Nathan was found guilty of 26 charges, including first-degree murder, after a trial in April. Today, four of the charges were dismissed because of a technicality.

44 Year-old Case Goes to Trial – Neither Party Still Exists

In another incredible example of the American legal system, UPI reports

ALBANY, N.Y., March 2 (UPI) — A New York state appeals court has ordered a trial for a 44-year-old lawsuit between two companies that no longer exist. The three-judge Appellate Term ordered the case of Lance International, which dissolved 35 years ago, versus First National City Bank, which has since become Citibank, to go to an “immediate” trial after 44 years of wrangling, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
