Jack O’Lanterns Originated From Irish Turnips

According to English Heritage, which manages over 400 of England’s historic buildings, monuments and sites, jack-o’-lanterns originated in Ireland, “where people have been carving turnips and other root vegetables for centuries, to ward off evil spirits.” Irish legend holds there was an actual man named Jack, who was “cursed to spend all of time roaming the earth with only a burning coal (inside a carved out turnip) to light the way, as his punishment for trying to trick the devil.”

Airline Installs Pay Toilets

The Age .com.au reports –

One of Europe’s biggest discount airlines, Ryanair, will charge passengers to use on-board toilets. The Irish airline is planning to make its toilets coin-operated, forcing passengers to fork out £1 ($1.65) or €1 ($1.45) every time they want to spend a penny in the sky. The extra charges, which come on top of separate fees for check-in baggage and snacks, will coincide with the reduction of some toilet facilities on Ryanair planes. “By charging for the toilets we are hoping to change passenger behaviour so that they use the bathroom before or after the flight,” Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara told the Daily Mail.

What I’m wondering is – what if you don’t have money for the facilities?

Irish Columnist Has Deathwish

A columnist for The Irish Times opines that women in the workforce are largely responsible for the economic crisis. This theory actually holds much credibility with many experts, but I would hate to see his inbox now. One nugget from the post –

“Whether working women actually caused the credit crunch is now a moot point. The point is that removing women from the workforce would mitigate its effects.”

Polish, er Irish Joke

The BBC reports that Irish police have, on 50 occasions, written tickets to a driver from Poland named Mr. Prawo Jazdy, who seems to have 50 different addresses. Fifty Irish police officers thought that Prawo Jazdy was the driver’s name, when it was actually “Drivers License” in Polish. Also, 50 drivers failed to point out this error to the police officers. Who’s laughing now.
