Jeffrey Martin takes massive panoramic photographs of the world and his photos let you go from the panoramic to the intimate in a single mouse swipe. Now he’s truly outdone himself with a 900,000 pixel-wide photo of Prague’s Old Town that took six months to build.
The editors of Smithsonian magazine have just announced the 50 finalists in their 9th annual photo contest. They’ve kindly allowed me to share several of the final contenders below, including some amazing images from each of the competition’s five categories: Americana, The Natural World, People, Altered Images, and Travel.

Heavy monsoon rains have been drenching Southeast Asia since mid-July, causing mudslides and widespread flooding. The deluge has now reached Bangkok, with rising water and associated problems affecting most of the city’s 10 million residents. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said that parts of the capital could be inundated by up to 1.5 meters of water and remain flooded for up to a month.
