Thanks to satellite imagery, it’s easier than ever to see how the Earth is changing over time. The Ucayali River in Peru is changing its course at an especially rapid pace, and Zoltan Sylvester, a sedimentary biologist who blogs at Hindered Settling, used Google Earth Engine and data from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Landsat program to put together this neat encapsulation of how the river has changed since 1985.

The shaking of minor earthquakes can feel like a garbage truck driving by. T-Rex is no plain old garbage truck though. The 64,000-pound “mobile hydraulic shaker” is designed specifically to make the ground rattle and jolt—all so scientists can study how the ground reacts to earthquakes.

What’s got scientists so intrigued by the mineral is its composition. It’s a rare combination of strontium, calcium, chromium, sulphur, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen that’s completely distinct from any of the other 4,000 known minerals in the world. Its commercial use has yet to be determined.

Earthquakes deep below West Antarctica reveal an active volcano hidden beneath the massive ice sheet, researchers said today (Nov. 17) in a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience. The discovery finally confirms long-held suspicions of volcanic activity concealed by the vast West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Several volcanoes poke up along the Antarctic coast and its offshore islands, such as Mount Erebus, but this is the first time anyone has caught magma in action far from the coast.
