Scientists Of 1975 Predict Today’s World

2000-sIn 1975, the book “The People’s Almanac” asked scientists to forecast what to expect in the year 2000. Some of the interesting (and accurate) stuff included –

Vladimir Aleksandrovich Kotelenikov: [In the 21st century] Miniature television sets the size of cigarette packets will be used as everyday videophones. The images they transmit will be able to be transferred to a wall-size screen for greater detail.

John Pierce: Cable television will bring newspapers directly to homes by wire.

Things Babies Born in 2011 Will Never Know

An interesting list from Yahoo that consists of some obvious choices (video tapes, dial-up internet, CDs) and some less obvious ones (watches, forgotten friends). I agree with most of the list, but the death of a few of the items seems to be premature to me. Sure, magazines, newspapers, corded phones and watches are on their way out, but they will be around for many years. And, a few of the items are just wrong. I don’t see wires or mail or the work/home separation going away anytime soon. Lastly, certain thing just refuse to go away –  there has been no reason for fax machines to exist for the last ten years, but they’re still here. What do you think?

A Pessimist’s Guide to The Next 10 Years

The title pretty much explains this excellent post. The author explains, in 45 short points, how the near future is going to suck more than the present does. Some of the points are spot on; already occurring – 6) The middle class is over. It’s not coming back or 32) Musical appreciation will shed all age barriers. Some points seem to be forward looking, but plausible – 20) North America can easily fragment quickly as did the Eastern Bloc in 1989 or 13) Enjoy lettuce while you still can. While others are just out there – 25) Dreams will get better or 27) Hooking up will become ever more mechanical and binary.

All in all, I found the post very entertaining. Don’t miss it.
