Why We Hate Email, But Love Texts

The first text message (“Merry Christmas”) was sent way back in 1992 in the UK. Text messaging spread as mobile phones became more popular in places like Japan, creeping into places like the US sometime later, but by the late 2000s, it was everywhere. By 2012, it’s estimated that 14.7 trillion messages were sent from mobile phones worldwide. That number grew to 28.2 trillion in 2017.

How to Unsend a Gmail Message

00ps1Yes, even a lowly peon (you) can be like the owners (Goldman Sachs) and recall an email after it has been sent. However, you have only 30 seconds after clicking ‘Send’ (ownership does have its privileges). This feature must be enabled in Gmail, but it is a simple process if you follow the steps in PC Mag’s article. I tried it – very quick and easy.

It was 29 years ago today that V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai copyrighted the term “email”—actually, “EMAIL” to be precise. Depending on what you’re reading (and when you were reading it), you might also have seen “e-mail,” “E-mail,” “Email,” “eMail,” or “electronic mail.” But no matter how it’s spelled, email has become a permanent fixture in all of our lives since its official naming day on Aug. 30, 1982. But email actually got its start long before it got its permanent name. Shiva, an MIT alumnus and professor, traces the history of electronic mail in this handy infographic, which includes his own work in developing an email system back in 1978 when he was just 14 years old.
