Austrian Park Is Underwater Half Of Every Year

This is the Green Lake in Tragoess, Styria, which sits at the foot of snow-capped Hochschwab mountains. Throughout the frozen winter months the area is almost completely dry and is used as a county park. It is a particular favourite site for hikers. But as soon as the temperatures begin to rise in spring, the ice and snow on the mountaintops begins to melt and runs down into the basin of land below. The park fills up with ice-cold crystal clear water, which gets its distinctive green colouring from the grass and foliage beneath. The water levels rise from about one or two metres deep in the winter to as much as 10 metres in the late spring and early summer. The waters are at their highest in June when it becomes a mecca for divers keen to explore the rare phenomenon, before the waters recede at the end of July.

On Monday (March 12, 2012) , Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner will climb into an eight-foot-capsule that looks more like a spaceship than a basket for a helium balloon – and ready himself for a record-breaking jump from 23 miles up. Monday’s test jump, from a mere 60,000 feet, is prelude to a leap which will see the spacesuited skydiver become the first person to break the speed of sound outside a vehicle. He plans to dive 120,000ft – nearly 23 miles – from the adapted weather balloon full of helium. The journey will take just ten minutes.
The current skydiving record is 19 miles and it occurred over 50 years ago.

A devout Catholic who popped into church to thank God for a his rescue from a lift was crushed to death by a 860lb stone altar, the Telegraph reports. Police spokesman Roman Hahslinger explained that Gunther Link, 45, was “a very religious man and had been scared when he was trapped in the lift and had prayed for release”. He continued: “A short while later he was pulled out of the elevator and he went straight to the church to thank God.” Link was reported missing by his cousin, and found the next day by parishioners going to Mass at the Weinhaus Church in Vienna.Hahslinger concluded: “He seems to have embraced a stone pillar on which the stone altar was perched and it fell on him, killing him instantly. We have found his fingerprints on the pillar. We are now investigating the case further.”
