PublicDomainReview.org published the story of Mary Toft, who in 1726 claimed to be delivering rabbits. For a short time, she was able she was able to maintain the hoax, but eventually the truth was uncovered and she was charged with being a “Notorious and Vile Cheat” and sent to Bridewell prison.
